Very few of the construction projects that I have worked on or come in contact with have utilised 4D. Nearly every project these days has a 3D model for design, but not a 4D model. Why is 4D not yet the norm for construction? Is this because 4D modelling for construction planning is too difficult and expensive?
4D construction planning combines a 3D model with a 4th dimension of time. This allows simple graphical communication of a construction sequence.
Traditionally, 4D solutions have relied on complex and expensive engineering CAD software that requires specialist skills to operate. In many cases, the 3D engineering model forms the basis for the 4D model. This makes operating and maintaining a 4D model expensive, and as a result 4D is often not utilised.
Envision redefines construction planning by providing a simple and cost effective method for 4D modelling. A detailed 3D CAD model is not required to realise the benefits of 4D construction planning. Envision enables users with only basic 3D skills to create a 4D model using the free version of Google SketchUp, therefore significantly reducing costs and removing the dependency on accessing the engineering 3D model.
Google SketchUp is ideal for construction visualisation because planners can quickly create a 3D mockup of their project. Modelling effort is minimised by incorporating pre-built components from the Google 3D Warehouse, an online searchable repository of free 3D models shared by users all over the world. So if your model needs a crane, no need to model it, just pull it down from the Warehouse. Google SketchUp connects with Google Earth, to allow modelling in the context of the actual buildings and terrain at your site.
Envision animates the baseline, forecast and actual construction sequence by connecting the 3D Google SketchUp model with the project schedule. The colour and transparency of objects in the model are changed as time progresses to represent different states in the construction lifecycle. Typical states are Fabrication, Site Delivery, Install and Testing.
Envision shares the power of 4D via the web so that everyone on the team can access it quickly and simply anywhere to realise its benefits.
- 4D for construction planning and execution provides significant benefits such as:
- Validation of the planned construction sequence
- What if scenario planning of various construction sequences
- Identification of construction activities with safety risks
- Simple communication of actual progress in 4D
- Early Identification of delays so mitigating actions can be taken
- Pre-start planning communication with construction crews
Using a 4D model is a great tool for project planning and execution that when utilised can significantly improve project productivity. According to a study by COAA, 63% of direct labour utilisation on mega construction projects is spent waiting for materials and equipment, traveling to the area, taking early breaks, and planning how to do the work. This means that techniques such as 4D planning that improve labour utilisation can significantly improve project productivity.
I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences on SketchUp or 4D visualisation for construction.
